There he sat, all brokenhearted...

Potty training always seemed to me to be a pretty simple undertaking. I'm not saying I thought it's easy, just that there's not much to it. You sit, and just let go. Right?

Oh, how naive I was.

First, there's an entirely different dynamic to peeing when the equipment is external. At first Dan would just sit to pee, and since his equipment is, um, petite, the pee just fell into the bowl. No problema.

Then someone (the sperm donor, aka my husband) showed him how to pee standing up. Okay. As long as there's a stool, it still goes where it's supposed to. Fine. It's all good.

Until the day Daniel decided he'd try to direct that pee by holding onto his equipment. His eye wasn't the only thing he squirted.

Oy.

Still, he's been a very quick study, thanks to his lifelong obsession with toilets. There have only been two accidents, though he still does wear a diaper for his nap and overnight. We're very proud of him. He was having a harder time making a solid deposit, but since we've been rewarding him with Matchbox cars and Thomas trains he's been doing great!

Today, though, was a momentous day in Daniel's potty education. He told me he needed to go poopy in the potty, so we marched to the bathroom and down he sat.

Then he farted. And peed at the same time.

Daniel: Daniel get train now?

Me: No, honey. You didn't go poopy.

Daniel: Daniel went poopy!

Me: No, honey. You just puffed.

Daniel (straining): Where's the poopy? Poopy busy.

Poor guy. He came to poop, but only farted.
