Daniel's teacher wanted to get to know him, so she sent home a note asking us to take a few moments to write about our child. She said,
"What is your child like? What are the things you, as a parent, know that would be important for me to know? What are your child’s interests? I want to know how your child thinks and plays and how you see your child as a learner and a person."
Daniel is full of passion and curiosity. He’s very easy-going most of the time, but can dig in his heels with the best of them. He’s outgoing and laughs easily and often, and wants to be everyone’s friend.
He’s happy being in the band as opposed to being the band leader, but seems to step up easily and pick up the baton when needed. He often has his own perception of the way things should be done, and steering him from that course once chosen can be a challenge.
He learns easily and well when he is focused, often picking things up after being shown/explained only once. He often asks me how to spell words, and I coach him through. He will usually figure it out mostly on his own. He can read beginner books, though I have to really stay with him to keep him from getting frustrated and wanting to quit when he doesn’t know a word, or if there seem to be too many.
Daniel’s main interest is restrooms, and favorite object is urinals. He very much prefers going to the men’s room than the ladies’, and often gets very upset if it isn’t possible or permitted. He often discusses and differentiates between urinals and toilets by how they flush (manual or “magic”), their seats (oval or inverted U), and height. He also counts the stalls…it’s quite the interesting hobby, is it not? And, unfortunately, shows no sign of abating. I’m just hoping I can distract him from wanting to be a urinal for Halloween…
Daniel also loves trains and swimming, Davey and Goliath and Diego, all of his cousins and his “wife” Emma. He has a “dog sister” Phoebe, who must stand in for the human sibling he does not have. He is very afraid of bees.
He loves to draw, but know now that unless directed otherwise (and usually even when he is) the art will consist mainly of restrooms in various stores and venues, with said restrooms taking up most of the square footage.
Dan often thinks outside the box, as you already saw when he wanted to create his own number for the Meet-and-Greet sign-in sheet. He went to art camp this summer and while the rest of the campers made a pencil holder out of a can, Dan made a robot.
Did I mention that he’s stubborn?
His snits never last long, and he usually has a smile on his face. He is a creature of habit, and sometimes gets addled when things change.
There is so much more to him than I can possibly put down on paper, but hopefully this gives you a place to start. My husband and I are confident that you are the perfect teacher for our son, and we look forward to supporting Dan’s education in as many ways as needed as he traverses the next thirteen years, and beyond.
